Symposium for Mallet Percussion Players

SMPP is part of the Kutztown University Summer Music Festival.

Choose your track (You will choose one of the following tracks: marimba, vibraphone, or xylophone. Tuition will include the opportunity to collaborate with other musicians, in either a chamber group for classical or rhythm section for jazz or ragtime.):

•  Marimba Artist (solo focused)

Faculty: Leigh Howard Stevens and Matthew Coley

•  Vibraphone Artist (jazz focused)

Faculty: Tony Miceli

•  Xylophone Artist (classical, ragtime, and jazz focused)

Faculty: Mutsumi Tzuzaki and David Harvey

•  Contemporary Mallet Percussionist (chamber music, mixed pieces with other musicians attending the KU Summer Festival)

Faculty: Frank Kumor and Matthew Coley

Other details, features, and important pieces of information:

•  All instruments are provided by CMPR. You are welcome to bring your own instrument, but we have 120+ instruments in our collection and many of them are modern. Please reach out if you have questions.

•  All participants will have the opportunity to be involved in ensemble playing. 

•  There is a concerto competition! It's open to all ages and the winners perform with an orchestra in Greece or the US. (There is a $60 additional application fee for entering the concerto competition. This will cover the cost of hiring an accompanist.)

•  All participants will have the opportunity to attend Career Building/Entrepreneur sessions with our career advancement coaches.

•  All participants will have the opportunity to attend Mallet Percussion History sessions with David Harvey.

•  There will be daily private lessons, rehearsals, classes, and coachings.

•  There will be ample opportunity to perform as a soloist or chamber musician.

•  Tuition is $1200, all inclusive of housing and meals (+ $50 application fee).

Participants are responsible for their own travel to and from Kutztown. The airports for this region include the Lehigh Valley, Harrisburg, and Philadelphia airports. Shuttles will be scheduled to and from airports. Please coordinate with us.

The Symposium for Mallet Percussion Players is designed to foster and support young artists of marimba, vibraphone, and xylophone for a future as a skilled practitioner of their career in music. Held in the world-class facility of the Wells-Rapp Center for Mallet Percussion Research alongside the Kutztown University Summer Music Festival, SMPP is an invaluable experience for high school and college students to learn from professionals in the top of their field.
